Certified Divorce Consultant

The Certified Divorce Consultant (CDC) is a divorce advisor who comes from a financial planning, accounting, or legal background and goes through an intensive training program to become skilled at analyzing and providing expertise on the financial issues of divorce. The CDC helps clients determine the short-term and long-term financial impact of any proposed divorce settlement. They also provide valuable information on financial issues that are related to the divorce, such as tax consequences, dividing pension plans, continued health care coverage, stock option elections, and more.

  • Analysis of pension and retirement plans
  • Calculating the present value of a pension
  • Determining the cost basis and capital gains on the sale of the marital home
  • Determining if the client can afford the marital home, and if not, what he/she can afford
  • Evaluating the insurance needs of the client, and determining if the client qualifies for COBRA
  • Determining earning capabilities
  • Establishing assumptions for projecting inflation and rates of return

A Certified Divorce Consultant, CDC, is a designation awarded to individual educators who have:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the financial services field, accounting, or family law.
  • Self-study course with four modules.
  • Business office reviewed for best practices implementation.
  • Strong history and willingness for community outreach demonstrated.
  • Exemplify highest standards of ethics and excellence of achievement in relevant industries.
  • Each CDC Designee must be nominated and approved by Board of Directors.
  • 15 divorce-specific hours every two years

Each CDC must renew their designation each year through the following actions:

  • 10 hours of approved CDC Monthly Training Webinars.
  • Member of National Ethics Bureau or AA membership standards for Better Business Bureau.
  • 15 divorce-specific hours every two years.
  • Exemplify highest standards of client service and educational outreach within community.

With recognized qualifications, the professionals with the Certified Divorce Consultant designation have received specialized training to work with divorcing spouses in order to reach a fair and equitable divorce settlement which includes understanding the tax ramifications of the division of assets.
